If you like punk rock, then you’ll love “The Hasbros”

The Hasbros play a unique brand of melodic post punk pop. The band has drawn influences from 60’s rock, 70’s punk, 80’s new wave, jazz, noise and everything in between. While melodic, The band isn’t afraid to apply sandpaper as needed.

The Hasbros are an American indie alternative pop band from Queens, New York who played their earliest gigs at CBGB’s and other NYC clubs. The band includes guitarists Ken O’Connor and Bob Hanophy, drummer Joe Gorelick (Garden Variety/Red Hare) and bass player Tom Cavanaugh (Lita Ford/Pop Smart Overdrive). Their 2018 LP, “Cart Before The Horse” received rave reviews. Their follow-up, “God Hates The Hasbros” is out now.

The Hasbros – “God Hates The Hasbros”

The latest album from New York City indie rock band The Hasbros has just dropped and it contains 12 perfectly crafted songs that take the listener through a gamut of emotions from melancholy to elation. Drowned in melodic electric guitars, romping percussion and bass lines to die for, the album is a cross-pollination of modern post punk pop sensibilities and 90’s rock elements, topped off with melody and harmony that have you singing along after one listen.

The album’s second track, Conspiracy Theory is as timely as it is timeless with its themes of tin foil hats and the evil dark web that make you nod your head (while you bop). It’s a fitting track for a DIY Road Trip playlist.

Drummer Joe Gorelick sings “Be A Bee” taking a nonsensical foray back to Never Never Land and a place where society should just leave you alone. Guitarist Ken O’Connor accentuates the melody in “Turn It Around” which is dedicated to the late, Grant Hart of Husker Du fame. According to guitarist and vocalist Bob Hanophy, the track “is a beautiful, yet honest remembrance of a talent who had an outsized influence on us as younger musicians.” The joyous, “I Know Somebody” takes singsong lyrics through a Feelies-like vibe that then explodes into a Beatlesque chorus (that’s Thomas Michael Cavanagh on the bass).

“God Hates The Hasbros” is the follow up to the band’s critically received 2018 debut, “Cart Before The Horse” which made numerous “best of” lists. Like its predecessor, the new album wrestles with relationships, the powers that be and wishful thinking, all while having you hum along.
